ABOUT US

Koinonia is a Greek word taken from Scripture which means community. We are a community of caring people providing loving support and prayerful fellowship for all whom we come in contact. Each weekend has a set program it follows focusing on the Paschal Mystery: the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Although we use the word "retreat", it is not to be understood in the traditional sense. Retreat brings to mind the notion of silent inward reflection under a Spiritual Director, apart from others. These valuable traditional programs are still available, however, with Vatican II came an expanded application of the word. A Koinonian retreat utilizes this broader definition in that we come together apart from the rest of society for a weekend to form a community. One does not reflect in total silence, instead community is built through the sharing and support of fellow participants.

The Koinonia weekends usually have 20 - 45 participants who are divided into smaller discussion groups at tables. A Roman Catholic priest officiates over the Sacraments and spiritual matters, but the weekend is under the direction of a qualified lay person assisted by his or her team. The weekend format consists of talks, discussions, sacramentals, liturgical celebrations and other activities which foster renewal and give participants an experience of what it means to be church.

More than just a weekend, participants often come away with life-long friendships and a sense of belonging. Come experience Koinonia.
